April showers, May flowers
To find wildflowers is to feel like you have discovered a new species.
But it is not a bushwhacking expedition of biological discovery, it is simply looking at your feet.
And right now, in the Willits area, flowering species have began to proliferate.
What the new month of May brings is anybody’s guess.

County gov’t
There’s more budget talks on the meeting agenda tomorrow and that includes a suggestion to de-fund the county museum.
WHAT: Board of Supervisors
WHEN: Tuesday at 9 AM
WHERE: Participate remotely or at 501 Low Gap Road, Ukiah
The county did whittle down proposed expenditures, but now the museum is listed as a way to save more than $555,000.
A presentation prepared for Tuesday’s meeting included a list of ways the county thinks can help balance its budget.
Board of Supervisors’ Funding Considerations:
• Consider defunding non-core mandated services
• Museums - $555,772
• Parks – new department - $1,592,640
• *Facilities – is requesting $1,025,757 above NCC, reduce by a percentage
• *Information Technology Reserve - $376,120
• *Prevention, Recovery, Resiliency, and Mitigation – is a non general fund department, but is requesting $400,000 of general fund, reduce by a percentage
• Review Cannabis revenue after May 31, 2022
* Departments that are not considered core mandated services, but are considered fundamental in Board Goals and Priorities—Mendocino County
Note: NCC or Net County Cost is a term used by the county and it refers to funding needs greater than a department’s revenue.
A Cultural Services Agency oversees both the county library system and the museum.
Here’s a table from the 21-22 county budget:
A report from CEO Darcie Antle’s office brings forward some other considerations since the last meeting.
The county says it has found some budget items eligible for American Rescue Plan Act money.
Newly identified ARPA-eligible budget items in the county’s report:
-Department of Transportation: $120,000 for diesel particulate filters.
-Sheriff’s Office: $1.4 million, includes vehicles and facility upgrades.
-Probation Department: $40,000 for locks, $131,000 for a pre-trial release program.
