Essay

There’s a book on my desk that I keep intending to read from cover to cover. It’s a collection of letters written by Bret Harte in 1866 and ‘67 when he lived in California and was a correspondent for the Springfield Republican and Christian Register.

The Republican and Register were both Massachusetts newspapers. Bret Harte’s California is a collection of Harte’s work for those papers edited for publication in the book by Professor Gary Scharnhorst, University of New Mexico.

Harte’s writing became a lucrative practice, says Scharnhorst, saying Harte “…would earn a cool ten thousand dollars for writing a baker’s dozen poems and stories for the publishing firm of Fields, Osgood & Co in 1871-72…”
